CAIRN - Chocolate Brown Heavyweight Hemp Twill
Description
This fabric is produced in Eastern Europe using traditional mechanical methods that have been practiced for generations. Hemp has long been part of rural life here, where families have grown and processed the crop for centuries using time-honoured techniques.
The hemp is cultivated in Romania and neighbouring Ukraine by small farming collectives who follow organic principles. While the crops are organic, they are grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilisers, and the fibre is spun, milled, woven, dyed, and finished using minimal water and no toxic chemicals.
Processing is entirely mechanical, following two classic stages — scutching and hackling — which separate and refine the long bast fibres. This gentle approach preserves the natural strength, length, and structure of the hemp, resulting in durable yarns with excellent integrity and texture.
Dyeing and finishing are carried out with environmentally responsible materials, including GOTS-certified, fibre-reactive dyes from trusted European partners. After dyeing, woven fabrics are sanforized for stability, and each batch undergoes thorough quality control before leaving the mill — ensuring consistent, high-quality hemp fabrics that reflect both heritage and care in production.
The mill is regularly audited under the SMETA framework (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit) — an independent assessment of working conditions, health & safety, and responsible business practices.
