Why Hemp & Coco Coir
At Jordan & Cousins Beds, we believe the modern bed industry has lost its way. Today’s market is flooded with cheaply imported beds and mass-produced furniture filled with synthetic foams, chemical-based fire retardants, glues, plastics, and artificial upholstery materials. Whilst these products may appear attractive on the surface, what lies beneath is often a completely different story — layers of petrochemical-based materials designed for low cost production rather than long-term comfort, sustainability, or wellbeing.
That is exactly why we chose a different path.

At Jordan & Cousins, we only use 100% organic, chemical-free hemp upholstery throughout our bed collections. No synthetic foams. No toxic sprays. No artificial fibres hidden beneath the fabric. Just natural, honest materials crafted the traditional way.
We also completely eliminate petroleum-based foam from our bed construction, replacing it instead with natural organic coco coir. Coco coir is derived from coconut fibres and has been used for generations as a natural upholstery and support material. Unlike synthetic foam which traps heat, breaks down over time, and can release chemical VOCs into the home, coco coir is naturally breathable, supportive, moisture resistant, and exceptionally durable. It allows air to circulate freely through the bed whilst providing a firmer, more stable structure naturally.

This combination of organic hemp and coco coir creates a bed that is not only luxurious and long-lasting, but also significantly healthier and more environmentally responsible than conventional upholstered beds.

Hemp is widely regarded as one of the most sustainable and organic materials on earth. For thousands of years it has been used naturally for textiles, rope, insulation, clothing, and furnishings due to its exceptional durability and environmental benefits. Unlike many modern synthetic fabrics, hemp requires very little water to grow, naturally resists pests without the need for harmful pesticides, and grows rapidly without damaging the soil. In fact, hemp actively helps regenerate farmland and absorbs significant amounts of CO₂ from the atmosphere during its growth cycle, making it one of the most environmentally positive crops available today.
But the benefits of hemp extend far beyond sustainability alone.
Hemp upholstery is naturally breathable, helping air circulate freely throughout the bed and reducing heat build-up often associated with synthetic materials and foams. This creates a fresher, cooler sleeping environment throughout the year. Hemp fibres are also naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites and bacteria, making them an ideal choice for healthier living and cleaner indoor air quality.
Unlike synthetic upholstery which can off-gas chemicals and VOCs into the home environment, our hemp fabrics remain completely natural and chemical free. The result is a bed that feels more authentic, more luxurious, and far more connected to nature itself.
One of hemp’s most impressive qualities is its incredible strength and longevity. Hemp fibres are amongst the strongest natural fibres in the world, meaning your upholstered bed frame maintains its structure and beauty for years to come. Whilst synthetic fabrics can deteriorate, flatten, or peel over time, hemp ages gracefully, developing character whilst retaining its integrity.
The texture and appearance of hemp also bring something truly unique to the bedroom. Its organic woven finish offers a relaxed yet luxurious aesthetic that simply cannot be replicated by synthetic materials. Every bed has warmth, texture, and individuality — creating a calm, grounded atmosphere inspired by nature itself.
At Jordan & Cousins Beds, we are proud to stand against disposable furniture culture and mass chemical manufacturing. Every bed we create is built with a philosophy centred around craftsmanship, sustainability, natural living, and genuine quality.
Because your bed should not only look beautiful.
It should also be one of the healthiest and most natural places in your home.
